 EDUCATION
Data is not information, information is not knowledge, knowledge is not understanding, understanding is not wisdom.

SCIENCE
A fact is a simple statement that everyone believes. It is innocent, unless found guilty. A hypothesis is a novel suggestion that no one wants to believe. It is guilty, until found effective.

Simulation and Modelling

Simulation is the exploration of existing models. ICT can uniquely illustrate scientific concepts with the use of high quality multi-media simulation enabling students to interact, reflect and develop their knowledge and understanding. The benefits of simulation are providing a concrete experience of the abstract, investigate life processes which are far too lightly, study complex interactions, simulate manufacturing processes, and difficult, dangerous or costly experiments. The key to a successful simulation learning experience is through appropriate intervention, through questioning, the emphasis of key observable points and constant evaluation of the development of understanding by the students.

Modeling is the expression of one’s ideas by constructing one’s own models. Modeling conjures up many different pictures in science teaching and learning. For example, a 3-D diagram of a water molecule, atomic models made from coloured spheres or plastic ‘pull-apart’ models of the human eye, ear, and torso. Modeling using ICT enables students to explore the effects of changing data and relationships of physical systems, thus helping students to understand the phenomena involved. The key to a successful ICT modeling learning experience is through interaction, manipulation, immediate graphic presentation of data, appropriate intervention, through questioning and constant evaluation of the development of understanding by the students.

There are some contributions of simulations and modeling such as develop higher thinking skills, and approach system thinking in a way that is manageable even from a fairly young age.

Problem-based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject in the context of complex, multifaceted, and realistic problems. The goals of PBL are to help the students develop flexible knowledge, effective problem solving skills, self-directed learning, effective collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation.

Problem-based learning is an exciting alternative to traditional classroom learning. In PBL, a class is divided into small group in about five students each. Teachers play their role as a facilitator in which guide them towards right track based on problem given. Students are given a situation or problem to be discovered. For the first step, students need to list all of the facts referred to problem given. Then students need to determine the ideas, learning outcomes and actions to solve the problem. Students are going for research to identify knowledge and data that will support their solution. The final part of PBL is presenting and defending conclusions. Sharing the findings with teachers and other students is important to demonstrate what they have learned.

For ICT subject, we applied PBL technique to solve two issues which are Smart School Concept and Cyber Crime. There are no difficulties on solving the problems since we have get used with PBL. Problem-based learning enhance our thinking level, improve out communications skills and become more flexible in processing and meeting obligations. We were able to finish the task within the time given. However, problems faced when one or some of the group members are not giving fully commitment towards PBL process. Each group has to enlist their group rules so that they know their personal responsibilities towards the group. As teacher-to-be, I will absolutely applying problem-based learning in school. This process is really effective towards students learning.
