Data logging is usually used in scientific experiments and in monitoring systems where there is the need to collect information faster than a human can possibly collect the information and in cases where accuracy is essential. The data is collected electronically by sensor instead of having a person to do it all the time. This means data can be more exact and can be collected much often than a person could. Plus, more data can be collected at the same time. Examples of the types of information a data logging system can collect include temperatures, forces, sound frequencies, vibrations, times, light intensities, electrical currents, pressure and changes in states of matter.
As for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) lessons, we have been exposed to data logging as a medium for a better teaching and learning process. Practically, we had used some of the data logging during experiments for other subjects but we are not aware that it is part of data logging. At the beginning of lessons, we had demonstrated on how to use data logging by an instructor. We had to get familiar with all the buttons first so that we can setup the right option as needed. The instructor also showed us how to connect the data logger into computer device and how to get data collected by using software. For the next session, we were given a task to do a simple experiment that applies the uses of data logging. As for my group’s experiment, there were some errors occurred while setup the equipment. We were not having correct results as needed. So we had to repeat the experiment. After finished the task, we were presented our results by using IWB.
The advantage of data logger is that they can operate independently of a computer. Data loggers are available in various shapes and sizes. The range includes simple economical single channel fixed function loggers to more powerful programmable devices capable of handling hundreds of inputs. The uses of data logging also can save more time rather than traditional ways. Teachers and students need a few times to assemble apparatus and materials needed for an activity.
The unique features of using data logger is experiment can be repeated or stopped at any time as most of the work is taken. Besides, less work to be done by the students. This enable experiment to be done in a small group yet the learning process becomes more meaningful.
However, there are some disadvantages of data logger. If the data logging equipment breaks down, some data could lost or not recorded. Some of the equipment are expensive and highly cost to afford. The equipment will only take readings at the logging interval which has been set up. If something unexpected happen during recordings, the data will not be collected.
