Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject in the context of complex, multifaceted, and realistic problems. The goals of PBL are to help the students develop flexible knowledge, effective problem solving skills, self-directed learning, effective collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation.
Problem-based learning is an exciting alternative to traditional classroom learning. In PBL, a class is divided into small group in about five students each. Teachers play their role as a facilitator in which guide them towards right track based on problem given. Students are given a situation or problem to be discovered. For the first step, students need to list all of the facts referred to problem given. Then students need to determine the ideas, learning outcomes and actions to solve the problem. Students are going for research to identify knowledge and data that will support their solution. The final part of PBL is presenting and defending conclusions. Sharing the findings with teachers and other students is important to demonstrate what they have learned.
For ICT subject, we applied PBL technique to solve two issues which are Smart School Concept and Cyber Crime. There are no difficulties on solving the problems since we have get used with PBL. Problem-based learning enhance our thinking level, improve out communications skills and become more flexible in processing and meeting obligations. We were able to finish the task within the time given. However, problems faced when one or some of the group members are not giving fully commitment towards PBL process. Each group has to enlist their group rules so that they know their personal responsibilities towards the group. As teacher-to-be, I will absolutely applying problem-based learning in school. This process is really effective towards students learning.
